Return to Devil's Bridge

So, if you find yourself wondering what to watch tonight I've got a suggestion, Hinterland. Available on Netflix. This is not a fun watch but it certainly is atmospheric and creepy.

posted about the first episode of this bilingual Welsh crime drama back in 2014. We were living overseas and our access to the show was sporadic (as was its filming and broadcast dates). We never did get to see Series 3.

Thanks to Netflix my husband and I were able to remedy that recently. And guess what? Yep, the series 3 returns to the location of the first...the creepy children's home at Devil's Bridge. (I have a particular affinity for stories about children's homes having spent several years of my own childhood in one.)

So, if you find yourself watching the first episode of Series 1 and think, like I did, that there is something going on with Superintendent John Powell? Well, you would be right.

And in this, possibly the last series of Hinterland, we finally find out what that is.

Read more here...

FYI - My husband and I watched The Witch the other night. Perfect viewing for the season...although I do have some questions. Which can all be explained away by it being based on folktales and folklore...however.  And apparently it links up to his recent film, The Lighthouse.

Comic Fest 2019 & Comments

Yesterday was Comic Fest. I dressed up as a Prisoner of Azkaban courtesy of some men's striped pjs I found years ago. I've done this before. It's easy and kids recognize it. Plus we have a ton of Harry Potter merch at the store.

I've also got my mini comics for handing out again! Underdog for the little ones and something darker for the teens.

Just a short blog housekeeping note. I rely on blogger to send me emails when someone's posted a comment. The link takes me to a page where I chose to publish or not. The other day I noticed something within blogger's interface that said "awaiting moderation" and found a bunch of comments that have gone unnoticed and unpublished (some, admittedly, were spam). No idea how that happened! All are published now and apologies to those who thought I was ignoring them :(

Stained Glass Saturday

And here we are back to the spider. In peril this time, poor thing! The little wren has to eat but this particular one looks like it could stand to miss a meal.

This scene is from the many stained glass windows of York Minster. I visited there many years ago but, alas, did not know about this lovely little creature or I would have made an effort to see it. Apparently, this 'sketch' was undocumented until re-discovered (and moved) in 1945. You can buy a reproduction in the Minster's online shop.

Science of the seance: why speaking to spirits is talking to yourself

Spiritualism fascinated the 19th century public and was furiously debunked by scientists. But its modern, “scientific”, incarnations are just as sinister...

The Romas Struggle...

Published in 2014 but interesting given the UK's current political context...and other countries. Another dose of reality in this fantastical month....

For an interesting insight into Roma struggles re: identity/stereotypes, try watching this old episode of Car 54, Where are You?

Had to do a 2nd post cause, yep, we're getting pelted by rain! It's so dark out there I've got the lights on. And we've had some thunder! Which is a real rarity here on the Avalon.

Pity me because I have to go out in that downpour to go to the dentist...ugh.

Stained Glass Saturday

My fascination with the spider and web imagery is, I believe, my new identity as weaver taking hold. I have yet to actually spin my own thread (it looks somewhat intimidating) but my weaving could be construed as web making.

Here's a stunningly beautiful contemporary web window I found on Etsy. Sold, of course, but it looks like the artist takes commissions. Hmmmm....

Seasonal beverage 2

My cousin, a very discerning individual when it comes to wine, sent me this last year. I finally got around to trying it and...oh my! Apples, honey, yum! Mixed it with some sparkling water and it was lovely.

10 things you didn’t know about the history (and mystery) of Halloween

Yes, love and divination had a lot to do with the night in question. But am I reading too much 'suggestion' in this cover image from a 1930s woman's magazine?

And how on Earth did the game below work!? If you didn't catch the apple her hair went up in flames?

Stained Glass Saturday

That stained glass window with the spider really stuck with me. So, let's explore some other stained glass imagery associated with the spider and its webs.

Here's a beautiful one from St. Mary's Church, Katowice in Poland.

The altar in the transept supposedly dates from the 15th century, whilst the wonderful stained glass windows on either side of the nave representing sin and virtue are the work of Adam Bunsch (1896-1969). - Source

In this case I'm going to guess the spider was representative of a virtue.  It's endless web spinning associated with the domestic task of spinning fleece into wool. I might be biased.
