Retro watching on Netflix

In anticipation of the 11th season of X-files in 2018, hubby and I decided to re-watch all of X-files (tv and movies...or at least what's available on Netflix) for the next several months. We recently finished Season 1 which was fun.

It was fun chatting about where we were when we first saw particular episodes. Commenting on 90s fashion styles (those ties!!) and technology (remember telephone answering machines!). And which episodes were well remembered and which were almost entirely forgotten was interesting. And then there are the guest stars; my husband spent time looking up various actors on IMDB after too many brain cells were popped from trying to remember what other shows we knew them from.

Of course, knowing what is to come in the X-files mythology means seeing huge holes in that particular part of the narrative. I'm glad they are dropping most of that for the next season. I felt the show was at its best when Mulder and Scully were sparring over monster-of-the-week theories or doing stand alones (that fantastic haunted house Christmas episode, for example).

Secret Messages

This is haunting...inspired in part by coded messages broadcast by the BBC to the French resistance during the 2nd World War.

Ghost Pipe

Been enjoying our walks in the woods out back of our little home. Came across something I'd never seen before. Discovered it is called Ghost Flower, Ghost Pipe, Indian Pipe, Corpse Flower or Monotropa uniflora. Thought it was a mushroom. But it's not.

Christie's Greenway Retreat

Agatha Christie (known locally by her married name Mrs Mallowan) spent many happy years at Greenway, her beloved holiday home. She and her family would retreat here once her latest book was complete, to enjoy each other's company in the relaxed surroundings. - Source

Long lost pals

Re-discovered my little Salary Man string doll in all the unpacking. Originally discovered him at a small gift shop in Tobermory, ON despite the fact that he's from Thailand.

He's supposed to do your work while you hang out at the water cooler. So he used to hang from my computer monitor where I worked at a marketing job (years ago now!). But no matter how long I hung around the cooler, my work was always waiting for me when I got back.

I guess mine is defective.

But I love him still.

Made with one piece of string! More here.

Whales a plenty...and a mermaid?

Went on several car journeys to see whales over the last few weeks. Saw humpbacks breaching and spy hopping. Saw the impressive backs of fin whales. Heard reports of killer whales in and around Trinity. You can probably google some video of their feeding activities there. Not something I wanted to witness. Which makes me a hypocritical carnivorous wimp I suppose. But I'm ok with that.

And then, along with a lot of dead capelin, I also saw  this on the shoreline. Remind you of anything?

Early sightings...and The Butcher's Boy

Last week I stopped into a coffee shop and noticed a container of pumpkin spice in amongst the cinnamon, nutmeg, and chocolate options. I sprinkled some into my coffee.
And today, at a different coffee shop, I noticed pumpkin muffins on offer. So I orderded one.

I wonder what the butcher's has on offer?

Haunting, eh?

Also, you should know that the last year has been, well, crazy. After 10 years overseas (in two 5 year stints) we returned to Canada last summer.

Since that initial big half-a-globe-away move back, we moved twice more. Locally, yeah, but three moves in less than a year? As proud as I am of my packing skills I am sick to death of boxes!

In the subsequent three months since finding our little forever house, we've unpacked most of our stuff. The last of the boxes and furniture bits from storage have to be reclaimed and moved in and well, it's now going slow. Yech. I've almost reached burn-out phase.

But we have done a ton of stuff around the place including painting most of the interior. My husband has proven to me that his claims to be able to build things with wood is...true! He built new steps for the back, put a gate in our gateless back fence. He's even building bookshelves now!

Must be the motivation of owning over renting.

I tired now....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
